Taking your car abroad

Taking your car abroad for your holidays this summer? Please find below our simple checklist for driving on the Continent.

You may be asked to produce your documents at any time, resulting in an on-the-spot fine if you are unable to do so. These documents should include: a valid full driving licence with paper counterpart for photocards, International Driving Permit where necessary, original vehicle registration document, motor insurance certificate, passport and double-check check for visa requirements. Also, do make sure your existing breakdown and insurance cover are sufficient.

GB stickers are compulsory and failure to comply could also result in an on-the-spot fine, as are both a warning triangle, and reflective jacket, in some European countries. When using headlights, you must adjust the direction of the headlamp beam to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers. Converter kits are widely available but double-check for suitability; alternatively, if your car is fitted with an internal shuttle, we would be able to make this adjustment for you.

And finally, do check the national speed limits, as Spain have recently reduced theirs!
