Roy Chapman Ltd Gives Confidence to Female Drivers

Tring – A Ladies’ Evening hosted on Wednesday 19 October by all makes service and MOT centre, Roy Chapman Ltd, in Tring, Hertfordshire, has taught women drivers across the local area the basics of car mechanics, accompanied by driving tips from the local police, so that they are less likely to find themselves stranded and vulnerable by the roadside and more confident in their dealing with garages.

After an initial welcome by Managing Director, Justine Chapman, the visitors headed for the workshop where volunteers were encouraged to change a car’s wheel under the supervision of two of the garage’s employees – senior service technician Vicky Kempton and service advisor Dean Wood – and were given practical advice including routine car maintenance and checking oil and fluid levels.

During refreshments of finger sandwiches and sushi, PCSO’s Katie Braham and Lauren Jackson of the Berkhamsted and Tring Safer Neighbourhood Team, talked about the use of mobile phones whilst driving and dash cams, the importance of seatbelts, road speeds and also the recent spate of car thefts in Berkhamsted.

Two ladies won a free service and a free valet and everyone left the event full of praise for the evening, a goodie bag and a Winter car care kit. Roy Chapman’s now trademark cupcakes were supplied by Tara’s Cake Company in Tring.

Just two of the comments were: “enjoyed the informal and relaxed environment and being able to get ‘hands on’ during the workshop demonstration” from Mrs Ferguson and “found the workshop demonstration full of practical advice and easy to understand” from Mrs Rudge.

Justine Chapman said, “this is our sixth ladies’ evening now and there is obviously still a demand for this type of event. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) survey a few years back showed that nearly half of women drivers didn’t get their cars serviced or wouldn’t handle a booking themselves as they were not comfortable dealing with mechanics and garages. We’re helping to address that issue and we’re also thinking of holding an event for young drivers in 2017”.
