How does oil work in a car?

A regular oil change will help keep your engine reliable along with keeping the engine efficient, minimising wear and tear on other components, prolonging the life of your car.

The oil in your car has many uses:

• Lubrication
• Protection
• Cooling
• Cleaning
• Fuel Economy

Lubrication

The oil is necessary to lubricate the moving parts of your car’s engine to ensure they run smoothly and efficiently without rubbing against each other and causing friction.

Protection

The oil further protects the parts, reducing their wear and tear and corrosion, thereby prolonging the life of your vehicle.

Cooling

Heat is generated in the engine during the combustion process. The radiator and coolant is only responsible for cooling the upper part of the engine; the oil within your vehicle’s engine will assist in the cooling process of critical engine components such as the pistons and gears.

Cleaning

A clean engine is necessary for its optimum performance and efficiency. The oil within the car’s engine helps avoid deposits forming and which will be removed during the filtration process.

Fuel Economy

Because of the four benefits above, regular oil changes will help improve and maintain fuel efficiency.

As we can see, the oil plays a massive part in the performance and running of your vehicle but is often undervalued and even forgotten. Manufacturers recommend oil and filter changes at given times purposely to keep your vehicle running at its optimum levels.

Ford recommends the use of Castrol Professional products as the vehicles have been developed, built and leave the factory with these oils specifically; protecting your car from the moment you start the engine.
